Blind contour is a drawing practice in which you look only at the subject and not at the paper. You allow the eye and hand to creep along slowly, like a tiny ant following the contours, tracing the edges that define areas of light and dark. It’s tempting to cheat and look at the drawing itself; we are trained to be constantly correcting ourselves. Because this practice eliminates the critical part of the drawing process, it allows you to simply see. The resulting blind contour drawings are not meant to be representations; they are artifacts of attention. The lines have a delightfully off-kilter quality.

I generate blind contour drawings in decaying / evolving series, in a project called Entropic String.

Artifacts of Attention is an invitation to everyone, everywhere, to participate in blind contour drawing practice, and share observations.
