I am interested in learning to read a landscape, and discerning its layers of natural history and cultural history. In disturbed landscapes, older patches show through — an oxbow, a sudden absence of invasive species along a trail, or a patch of older forest. Like a palimpsest, it’s fascinating to read meaning from these layers and find clues for which elements are older and which are more recent.
